At times it was as if they were trying to set the stage on fire with the

Audience members in the packed theater roared their approval for
their poetic peers and greeted them with spirited hugs and handshakes.

Every time I invite folks to Youth Speaks events I warn them; prepare for
your jaw to drop WIDE open... it'll make you want to run home and pick
up a pen!

Slam poems are rapid, raw and emotional. Poets will sing, pantomime,
and sound out dance rhythms to dramatize their works. Tears are nerver
scorned. Hugs are plentiful and at last year’s National Youth Slam
teenagers broke out into a spontaneous dance party midway through
the competition.

It's crucial that the young poets and writers today know that their
community embraces them, and that they do not have to be alienated
and isolated as previous generations of artists have been. As they
develop their voices, rhythms, and stories, being a part of a community
that loves them is of up-most importance. That's why Brave New Voices
is so important. These young poets are the new generation. They bring
the energy and passion that poetry needs as it continues to reinvent
itself, and they do it in their own vision, with their own sound. The brave
new voices are emerging.
