At Youth Speaks, the year has already begun with fire and excitement as we gear up the Living Word Festival in October 2007! Throughout the month of October, Youth Speaks is offering Bay Area students and teachers 3 FREE field trip opportunities!

1. Old to the New: Garden Concert & Hip-Hop Panel Discussion
Friday, October 12 @ Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF)

The day begins at 10am with registration at SFMoMA's theater. and kicks off at 10:30 with the opening discussion, whose panelists include Chuck D of Public Enemy, Jorge “Popmaster Fabel” Pabon of the Rock Steady Crew, and is moderated by Jeff Chang, author of the seminal hip hop history, Can’t Stop Won’t Stop.

Immediately following this unique educational opportunity dissecting the transformation of hip-hop in relation to its musical, lyrical, artistic, and dance elements, Living Word Festival presents a free outdoor concert held in Yerba Buena Gardens from 12:30-1:30, featuring a scratch set by the world-famous DJ Qbert, and a $1500 3-on-3 ALL STYLES dance battle with musical selection by DJ’s Celksiii and Deeandroid. Winning murals from the $1500 LWF Graffiti King/Queen contest will be on display throughout the Gardens.

The session culminates at 2pm at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which hosts four concurrent forums featuring pioneering hip hop artists in conversation with emerging artists in their discipline.  Representing the founding school of hip hop, the legends: Grandmaster Caz, DXT, and Popmaster Fabel. Representing the emerging schools in hip hop, Ise Lyfe and DJ Qbert. Each discussion will be moderated by decorated journalists Jeff Chang, Kimberly N. Cooper, Weyland Southon, and Adisa Banjoko, and are designed specifically for an audience of public high school students from San Francisco, Berkeley and Oakland.

Scourge is a hip hop theater piece which blends the traditions of Afro-Caribbean jazz, spoken word, and contemporary and folkloric movement into a compelling historical narrative tracing the social and diplomatic trajectory of Haiti.The Living Word Project will host open rehearsals of its repertory piece Scourge, followed by a Q & A with Youth Speaks Artistic Director, Marc Bamuthi Joseph and the cast from noon-2pm.  This intimate opportunity at ODC Theater to converse and interact with the cast will be educational for the students and performers alike.
